Welcome to DragonLadyDesigns: Textile Art and Craft from Orkney

I am based in the beautiful Orkney Islands, whose landscape and scenery, history and heritage inspire much of my work.

The isles in all their seasons and weather provide a rich palette of ever-changing colours and hues. The yellows, oranges and reds of a winter sunrise or sunset have to be experienced to be believed. A stormy day presents every shade of grey imaginable, and bright rainbows when the squalls pass over.

I work with mixed media, combining dyed and painted fabrics with fleece and felt, embellished by hand and machine embroidery, couching, quilting and beading. I often incorporate found objects in my pieces such as shells, driftwood and sea-glass collected on the local beaches.

I particularly like working out my own designs for pictures and wall-hangings, and the Celtic, Pictish and Viking heritage of Scotland in general and Orkney in particular regularly feature in my work.

(The Maes Howe Dragon worked in crewel wool on linen)

(Ring of Brodgar worked in long stitch, crewel wool on linen)

As well as the art pieces I enjoy working with fabric and yarn using knitting, crochet, felting, small-scale weaving, sewing and embroidery, to make more practical articles. Amongst my products are:

.......... greetings cards with embroidered motifs,

.......... beaded and embroidered jewellery and jewellery/trinket boxes,

.......... bags and holdalls,

.......... patchwork and appliqué quilts & cushions

.......... rag dolls, art dolls and other toys.

I have exhibited at the Strond Gallery in St. Mary's, Holm, the Pier Arts Centre, Stromness, and the Waterfront Gallery, also in Stromness.

My work is also available at The Tomb of the Eagles visitor centre and as I am a proud member of Orkney Arts and Crafts, my work is also available at their fairs, shows and Annual Exhibition and Sale.

Please browse the site to view some of my work. I am happy to accept commissions and discuss your requirements so that you can be sure your purchase is unique.
