Viking and Saxon Re-enactment costumes

The following pictures show examples of the stitching used to decorate a woman’s kirtle for Saxon re-enactment.

1. The neck of the kirtle was decorated in tapestry wool in three muted colours – brown, light blue and dull pink. The edges were blanket stitched and the twisted chains were executed in stem stitch. The small motifs were also stem-stitched.

2. The side seams of the kirtle were hand-sewn and then over-sewn in Van Dyke stitch.
