Techniques

The techniques I use to make and decorate the fabric products are varied.

Some products are made using recycled materials (all are thoroughly cleaned before use), or off-cuts and end-of-rolls. Depending on the size of the pieces, such fabrics may then be used whole or made into patchwork.

Small scale weaving using a rigid heddle loom, inkle loom or tablet loom, plus hand knitting, crochet and felting are used for some of the hangings and practical items such as hats and bags.

Decoration is done using crewel and freestyle surface embroidery, couching, quilting, fabric manipulation and the addition of beads and found objects. I work with different threads such as pure wool, wool mixes, pure silk, stranded cotton, perlé cotton, linen, hessian and metallic threads.

Often I will use more than one technique to deliver a final piece, most particularly with the art works, which I then photograph for my archive. I also use these photographs to make photographic prints, prints on canvas or incorporate into other pieces such as jewellery.
